Green Cards and Permanent Residency

Qualifying individuals whose goal is an extended stay in the US or a stepping stone to US citizenship might want to apply for a green card, which signifies permanent resident status in the US. There are a number of ways to obtain a green card, and we would be happy to discuss these options with you. Our office handles green card petitions for family members of US citizens and permanent residents, investment-based green card petitions for entrepreneurs, asylum-based green cards, and employment-based green card petitions for priority workers, professionals, and certain other categories of skilled and unskilled workers. If you qualify for a green card under multiple categories (such as family-based and employment-based), we will discuss your options and find out which type of petition best fits your needs and background.

Naturalization and Citizenship

If you are qualified and ready to take the exciting step of becoming a US citizen, we are here to help. Permanent residents who have lived in the US for a certain amount of time (usually 5 or 3 years, depending on the basis for permanent resident status) are generally eligible to apply for citizenship. The application process entails demonstrating that you are a person of good moral character, have a basic knowledge of the US government, have a continuous residence and physical presence in the US, and can read, write and speak basic English. You may also be entitled to an appeal if your naturalization petition has been rejected. Our firm is available to guide you through the challenging process of applying for naturalization and to assist you in working toward the ultimate goal of citizenship.

Temporary Visas

Temporary nonimmigrant visas allow individuals who are not US citizens or permanent residents to stay in the US for a limited amount of time. Depending on the visa issued to you, the amount of time you are allowed to stay can last anywhere from a few hours to several years. We assist clients with a number of non-immigrant visa petitions, including but not limited to the following:

B-1/B-2 Visitors

E Visas for Treaty Investors and Merchants

F-1 Visas for Students

H-IB Visas for Specialized Workers

Asylum Petitions

Asylum status in the US may be available to you if you have faced persecution or fear of persecution in your home country on account of your race, religion, nationality, political opinions, or membership in a particular social group. Asylum can be used as a defense to a removal proceeding or through an affirmative petition filed with US Customs and Immigration Services. Once asylum has been granted, you may be entitled to apply for work authorization and, after a year has passed, permanent resident status. You may also be able to petition to bring your spouse and children to the US once you have been granted asylum.
